BACK TO THE GRINDSTONE...

This is going to take some explaining...

The self-portrait, doodle figures project:

Each of the four figures were created in high relief, because it is the best sculptural method to convey stylistically abstracted drawings. There-go, these figures work from one viewpoint and are not intended to be seen in the round. So, the best way to document them are from one angle, stereoscopic images for a View-Master. The View-Master is a great for documenting the depth of the sculpture, while creating a playful gallery setting more conclusive to the humorous elements of my work.

In comes the monstrous kinetic sculpture figures:

Since these 3 figures are kinetic, the View-Master is not the best format/venue in which to display/experience them. There-go, a dark ride format is introduced. That way, the audiences' viewpoint can be controlled and the doodle figures are seen from one angle, while the kinetic sculptures can be seen moving.

Problem:

The doodle figures are too small for this format.

Solutions:

#1) The doodle figures are 3-D scanned and CFC carved out of foam to be roughly 6 feet tall, and then incorporated into the dark ride.

#2) The doodle figures are stereoscopically photographed and projected in 3-D in the dark ride. The audience must wear 3-D glasses to see the effect correctly.

#3) The doodle figures are digitally scanned, a photograph is layered onto the scan creating a depth map that can then be exaggerated by offsetting the pixels, thus creating more depth in the stereoscopic image. 3-D glasses are worn.

So, by doing a stereoscopic projection instead of creating a sculpture, I can incorporate animations into the background behind the figures!!! This is great because these figures were never meant to be kinetic, so the backgrounds provide the gimmick!

However, by doing stereoscopic projections, this also means that the kinetic sculptures and environment have to incorporate 3-D glasses as well, which means black lights and luminous paint.

CRAZINESS!

Things to do before February:
1) create four 3-D projections
2) create 3 kinetic monsters
3) create one-person car that is easily maneuverable
4) create walls of 2-D images done in luminous paint
5) create View-Master reels to be sold at opening
6) create costumes for workers to wear in Collegeville Costume style
As well as securing a venue, write a thesis draft, and find workers...

- Obviously, the 3-d projections and View-Master reels will have to be outsourced.
- The 8ft. 2-D images can be printed out from drawings in my sketchbook.
- Collegeville Costumes are something that I had not mentioned before, because I never thought I'd have enough time to make them. Well, let's entertain the notion for a minute...

Collegeville and Ben Cooper costumes were what nearly every kid wore in the 70s and 80s trick-or-treating. They consisted of a cheap plastic mask and cheap vinyl one-size-fits-all kind of sleeveless one-piece. They were made for an amazing array of television, movie, and corporate characters. Like these...

My sister an I grew up wearing these; I have vivid memories of the plastic cutting into my eyelids. Anywho, I thought that since I'm going to need help, I might as well incorporate my minions into the ride, and for cohesion sake, make retro costumes based off of my drawings:

Turns into:And...Turns into...And this...Becomes this...In order to do this, I would need to make 3 faces out of Super Sculpey, bake them, vacuum form plastic over them, cut them out, and paint them. As for the outfits, I guess screen print on vinyl and heat weld 2 body forms together. I guess it would take about a week, if I had everything in place. 3 months at the rate I'm going. It's difficult to plan when you've never done a process before.

Anywho, that's a pipe dream I had a few semesters ago...

I'll write more on the digital 3-D process once I understand it better.

UPDATED WORKS IN PROGRESS

I thought about adding semi-gloss to the eyes, lips, and nostrils, however, I am afraid that reflections might detract from the final image. I need to create a background in either red or blue that has depth. I experimented with yellow, red, and green lighting on the left side of the face, but did not like the results. So, I'm thinking blue light with a red background is probably the way to go.

I still need to paint body hair on this figure, right now he looks 13. I like the way the yellow light projects on the left side of the body. The background needs more depth as well.

This was a test shirt, the final one will be sewn around the edge. The hair also needs some work: highlights and lowlights. I will be adding subtle veins to the eyes as well. While I have backgrounds in mind for the other 2, I am still undecided about this one.

The 4th one, in my studio, will be painted monochrome green with red, purple, and blue letters next to it, in front of a yellow background.

I still have alot of work to do, and will try to finish before reviews...

BELT TESTS

Here are some tests to see what kind of shaking effects I can get with the exercise belt mechanism:




A few things I discovered:

1) The further (horizontally) the straps are connected from the center of the figure, the less shaking occurs.

2) Setting 1 seems to give me my desired effect. (Setting 4 immediately broke a pop rivet and tore the duct tape off the back.)

3) I can control the amount of shaking through creating slack/ tension on the ropes: more slack less shaking.

So, I am confident that this machine would work in creating my desired effect. However, there are still some things that I am curious about. I believe that with a heavier object, I might have to increase the setting. Also, I wonder if I can create a similar mechanism that is more compact; perhaps if the motor were installed directly into the figure, I could have a shaking effect without the belts? For now, this is solution # 1.

These past few week-ends have been dedicated to a cognate report, showing interviewees around the campus, and doing a bit of catching up on my GSI hours. So, I have dedicated my Winter Break to catching up in the studio.

BARSTOOL!

I recieved my first double ring, 30in, chrome bar stool today!

This is the basic frame that I wanted, and it needs some modification.

First off, I need to re-enforce some of the bolts/joints: I want this thing to be solid.

Second, create a circular metal plate that will be attached to the swivel top.

I need a larger surface to which I can attach more metal.

Third, the height may be an issue. As you can see in the original drawing:


I had to add on to the stool to create my desired height, which I may need to do in real life. How this addition will effect the aesthetics or functionality is something I need to explore further.

Speaking of aesthetics: this chrome is SHINY! It needs some wear and tear. I think some flat metallic spray paint may be in order. I may even sand off some of the finish by the joints and corrode the metal with urine. "Make it look mean."

So, yeah. It's a start...

SCENE CHANGE

So, I was drawing this diagram to try to figure out how to construct the base...

When I realized that it was too minimal. I thought about the entire tableau and decided that it needed another element: a red bar stool.

This empty bar stool represents a lack of companionship, and by giving it a red cushion, it becomes female. There go: lack of a female companion. So, I ordered a red one in the same style as the black.

That's all.
